How to read a material shopping list at the store
You printed your shopping list, arrived at the hardware store, and the product you planned to buy has a different bag size, different coverage per unit, or a different name. Here is how to adapt on the fly.
Concrete bags: 60lb vs 80lb vs 50lb
Our calculators default to 80lb bags (0.6 cu ft each) and 60lb bags (0.45 cu ft each). If the store only has a different size, convert: find the cubic feet per bag on the label. Divide your total cubic feet by that number and round up.
Example: you need 44 cu ft, the store only has 60lb bags (0.45 cu ft each). Divide: 44 / 0.45 = 97.8 bags. Round up to 98 bags.
Mulch and soil bags: different cubic feet per bag
Bags come in 1 cu ft, 1.5 cu ft, 2 cu ft, and 3 cu ft. Always check the label. Divide your cubic foot total by the bag size and round up.
Flooring: different square footage per box
Box coverage varies from 14 to 24 sq ft per box. Always enter the actual box coverage into the flooring calculator - do not guess. It is on every box label or product page.
Tile: sold by piece vs. by the case
Some stores sell tile by the individual piece, some by the case. A case typically contains 10-20 tiles. Find the pieces per case on the label. Divide your tile count by pieces per case and round up to full cases.
The rule: always use cubic feet or square feet as your common currency
When the unit changes, convert everything back to cubic feet (for volume) or square feet (for area), then divide by the new unit size. This works for any material.
